Much is happening in and around LOMA this summer!
New Tenants
Legal Eagles McCarter English move into the top floor of the beautiful Renaissance Centre on 4th and King.
233 King Street signs two new tenants: Award winning interactive design agency, The Archer Group and Wilmington Renaissance Corporation, a non-profit organization focused on Wilmington’s revitalization. Both expect to move in and throw killer parties in the fall.
Coffee Lovers Rejoice
The Perky Bean’s cappuccino machines are roaring again at the corner of 3rd and Market. Full of great coffee, food and WiFi, stop by with your laptop and appetite.
Parking O'Plenty in LOMA
Colonial Parking opened the Ships Tavern Garage, with over 400 spaces on Second and King. Many LOMA businesses are validating parking if you smile and ask nicely.
Making Old Buildings New and Cool
Preservation Initiatives (PI) begins construction on the 300 block of Market Street, which will be known as the Lippincott after the historic Lippincott Department Store. The space will be a mix of retail and commercial wrapped in historic architecture. Interested in being part of the cool? Contact Chris Winburn at 302-658-0513 or chris@pi-inc.net.
Renaissance Centre opens its doors
An official ribbon cutting, complete with shiny big scissors, marks the opening of the 8-story, 230,000 square foot office building. Mayor James Baker was on hand for the ceremonies and declared the building a ‘wonderful new business hub…stimulating economic development in the District.’ If you too want to stimulate something, contact Don Robitzer at 302-472-7200 or by email at drobitzer@commonwealthltd.net.
LOMA kickoff party a success!
Preservation Initiatives hosted the LOMA launch party, which was attended by over 50 of Wilmington's Who’s Who, all getting a first look at LOMA. LOMA's own seafood restaurant on 5th and Market, Pearls, provided the food and kept the wine flowing while Architects, Designers and Restauranteurs came to hear LOMA committee members and the Mayor describe LOMA’s vision. Sustainable design, or "Green" building, is a central development strategy
for the district. Why? "Because we intend to be part of the solution to the
growing problems of energy dependence and land / water pollution," says
Chris Winburn, VP of Preservation Initiatives.
LOMA is in a historic district with the largest concentration of mid-19th
century buildings in the region. By recycling these architectural gems, the
area's unique charm will remain intact while reducing their impact on local
landfills. "Greening" the buildings ensures they will be prepared to meet
the environmental, and political, challenges of the next century.
Did You Know...
• The district's first LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design)

• HUE Architecture (227 N. Market Street, 302.651.0214) is a full-service

Wilmington's LOMA is not alone in bringing innovative businesses together to attract regional talent and enhance creativity. In this issue, we highlight the citywide efforts underway in Savannah, GA.
The Creative Coast Initiative (TCCi) is a non-profit organization that recruits and supports "brain-based business" growth in Savannah. Brain-based businesses are loosely defined as including internet/web design, digital media, visual design, architecture, business consulting, and software development. Smart businesses, TCCi says, pay smart wages and attract smart people.
TCCi envisions a Savannah that acts as the hub and economic center of "The Creative Coast." Their vision is of a city that is "both beautiful AND smart. We see an all-inclusive, multi-cultural Savannah that values innovation and economic diversity. A Savannah that treasures its past but looks to the future by fostering a dynamic climate for creative, knowledge-based jobs, alongside the traditional economic sectors."
"We know [Savannah is] going to grow," says TCCi's Executive Director, Chris Miller. "Our job is to ensure it is qualitative growth... protecting and nurturing the unique charm and character that has made us a world-class city."
LOMA's steering committee couldn't have said it better themselves. |
